Who are these guys? Often seen at Sunday Mass at St. Francis de Sales over the past several months, these faithful men are on the path to become Franciscan Friars.
Currently in their second year of formation– known as a Novitiate Year–this dedicated group of Novices is on their way to make their first vows (also called simple vows) into the Franciscan order. Upon making their simple vows they will receive three knots in their cords, representative of their vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The Novitiate Year begins in August and concludes the following August. It is a year put aside for prayer, studying the Franciscan charism, living life in community, discernment and service.
The Interprovincial (English Speaking) Novitiate is located at St. Francis Friary in Burlington,WI. The Novices who come from all over the world (Ireland, Canada, El Salvador, Mexico, USA) are under the direction of 4 Professed Friars.
They maintain a facebook page, Franciscan Interprovincial Novitiate in Burlington, to give the outside world a glimpse of a day in the life of a Novice.
On Sundays they are free to attend Mass at the parish of their choice. When asked why they choose to attend St. Francis de Sales, Brother Michael says: “What draws me personally to St. Francis de Sales is that I before I entered the Franciscans I was a Pastoral Assistant for a parish, and I loved my ministry. St. Francis de Sales reminds me of that parish: good liturgies, good preaching, good music, good liturgical décor, and a sense of welcome. I always feel uplifted heading into my week when I come to Mass at St. Francis de Sales”. Some of the other brothers have mentioned that they appreciate the music and the warm hearted atmosphere. “We have been greeted and welcomed by several parishioners, so it encourages us during this year.”
We are happy that you are able to join us on Sundays, and look forward to supporting you as you travel on this wonderful journey!
