Faith with a Face – Jimmy Ring

Jimmy Ring

One of our younger regular volunteers, Jimmy Ring, is a senior at Badger High School. He is a reader at Sunday Mass and has been on the schedule since he was 14 years old. He initially decided to go to the reader training as he had been a server for many years but still wanted to help out at Mass. He was encouraged to try it from the example set by Ian Weber, who (now a college student) is also a wonderful SFDS reader. Jimmy goes through a process to prepare each time: he looks up the reading at home and practices, then looks it over right before Mass, and the 3rd run is “show time”! He says he still gets a little nervous “every single time”, but one would never guess that! He and his Dad, Bill, usually practice and do the readings together. What does he like about doing this? It’s helped him grow in his Catholic faith. He’s learned a lot about the readings, the people, the pronunciations, and scripture in general. And, he says he gets a lot of compliments! Jimmy has also helped out at other SFDS events like the Advent Breakfast and festivals. He has logged in community service hours and feels that his volunteer experience was an excellent item on his college applications. “Colleges liked to see that you are doing good things in your community.” When asked what advice he would have to other kids who are thinking about making this kind of commitment, he answered: “You should do it! It’s not that hard! And it’s a great way to be involved in your Parish!” Thank you, Jimmy, for lighting the way for other kids, and for doing such a wonderful job of proclaiming the word of God! — High School students, if you are thinking of joining a liturgical ministry (usher, greeter, reader) now is the time!
